D’origine ivoirienne, Mr. Raoul K, alias Raoul Konan, immigre en Allemagne en 1992 “pour raisons politiques et parce qu’aussi je n’avais aucune autre perspective” explique-t-il. Il débarque à Hambourg et entreprend une formation de charpentier. A l’été 1997, il défile dans les rues de Berlin avec un million d’autres technoïdes à piercings et baggys à franges durant la Love Parade. Là, sa vocation est immédiate: il veut être DJ.  Avec sa première paye de charpentier, il s’offre une paire de platines et commence à mixer. Mais c’est en 2003, au cours d’un stage de trois mois dans un studio bordelais, qu’il va réellement apprendre toutes les ficelles du parfait producteur de musiques électroniques.

En 2007, il saute le pas et monte son label Baobab Music, sur lequel ne sort que ses propres productions. Son premier EP, Le Cercle Peul ne passe pas inaperçu et emballe la critique. Quand d’autres DJs vont se référer aux grands noms de la techno, Mr. Raoul K. préfère citer Fela Kuti, Toumani Diabaté et Ali Farka Touré. Il met d’ailleurs un point d’honneur à inviter des musiciens – guinéens, maliens, sénégalais, ivoiriens, nigérians -  à jouer de la kora, du n’goni, du balafon et des sabars sur ses morceaux.

Son premier LP, Introducing My World, est prévu pour le 16 mai et sort chez Mule Musiq, un label japonais. On parie qu’on pourra le ranger entre Culoe De Song et le I Exist Because of You d’Henrik Schwarz. En attendant, le titre The African Government est d’ores et déjà téléchargeable par ici ou en écoute ci-dessous.

Le pitch laisse perplexe et mériterait, à l’instar des compilations de leurs cousins de Souljazz, un peu d’explications histoire de mettre d’ordre dans ce gloubi boulga transcontinental. On salue néanmoins la sélection ici en écoute.

Après le succès rencontré par leur projet The Very Best, Etienne Tron et Johan “Hugo” Karlberg poursuivent leur exploration des nouvelles scènes africaines avec cette compilation, qui sort le 2 novembre chez Crammed Discs, le très cosmopolite label belge.

Ce premier volume de The Sound of Club Secousse est en réalité une sorte de best-of des titres passés par le duo lors de leurs sessions de mixs surchauffées.

Lancées en 2008, les soirées Secousse sont vite devenues l’emblème de la génération electro-world, fascinée par les mélanges électro produits aux quatres coins du monde par des DJs réinventant, chacun à leur manière, la musique traditionnelle qui avait bercé leur enfance.

Les 17 titres de cette compil brassent un très large éventail de genres : on passe du kuduro angolais de Puto Prata au coupé décalé ivoirien de Magic System, tout en faisant des détours par le soukouss congolais de Lutchiana ou le funana capverdien avec Naty Kid.

On pourrait dérouler comme ça toute la liste des incursions géographiques de Secousse, mais, le mieux, c’est encore d’écouter:

The Very Best, c’est une histoire d’exil. Pas le genre fuite forcée pour échapper à la main de fer d’un régime oppresseur, ni même le genre fugue adolescente loin de papa-maman-qui-ne-me-comprennent-pas.

Non, c’est tout simplement la rencontre de trois jeunes mecs venus à Londres pour voir un peu ce qu’il s’y faisait.

Esau Mwamwaya, né au Malawi, vient y découvrir cette musique anglo-saxonne qu’il ne connaît que par les nombreux disques que possède son père. Etienne Tron, Parisien, issu de la bande de TTC, est là pour bosser chez Big Dada, et se lancer dans la production. Johan Karlberg, hip-hop kid suédois, vient vivre dans les squats avec ses potes.

Les deux derniers se rencontrent par hasard, et décident de former le duo Radioclit. S’en suivent quelques prods pour M.I.A. – alors toujours maquée à Diplo, grand pote d’Etienne -, Vampire Weekend ou Santigold.

Et c’est une nouvelle fois par un hasard complet qu’ils croisent la route d’Esau, batteur-chanteur parfaitement inconnu, et qu’ils lancent The Very Best avec un premier morceau, “Tengazako“, remix-reprise du “Paper Planes” de M.I.A.

Carton immédiat. Ils s’attaquent alors à l’écriture de leurs premiers morceaux, de leur première mixtape, puis de l’album “Warm Heart of Africa”, bric à brac total et réjouissant, ni Africain, ni Européen, mais “world” au sens premier du terme : sans frontières.

Mais comme personne n’avait compris ce que leur chanteur Luke Top racontait en anglais, voici la V.F.

Ten years after David Byrne’s article, Fool’s Gold’s album must be a total mind fuck for record store managers. Where does this music belong: it’s made in L.A, inspired by Ethiopian grooves, Highlife, Touareg Blues à la Tinariwen, with hebrew lyrics?

If you judge the band by the amount of people in it, Fool’s Gold is practically a soccer team. This multi-cultural collective was created by singer Luke Top and guitarist Lewis Pesacov after they found that they share the same interest for what morons call world music. When it comes to Fool’s Gold eclectic, danceable songs, the world eventually becomes a smaller and better place where people would finally treat music by The Smiths and King Sunny Ade as equal. There is hope.

Although the band had stated their clean-guitar sound was a reaction to the post-grunge fuzz dictat, this new opus seems to be answering the class/genre/race question more accurately than ever. “I’m glad we get that kind of question, but everyone should be answering those. Ask Jay-Z!”, says frontman Ezra Koenig.

If you liked the first opus, you’ll realise that “Contra” is more focused on Ezra’s personnal struggle with social status and with his own privileged background than some kind of obsession with pillaging African culture.

In 2009, 33 years-old south-african photographer Pieter Hugo headed to Abuja, Nigeria to focus on what’s become the 2nd largest movie industry in the world releasing up to 2500 movies a year: Nollywood.

Ahead of Hollywood, and behind Bollywood, it produces movies on its own terms (worth over $2.3 billion as of 2008), telling stories that appeal to and reflect the lives of its public: it is a rare instance of self-representation on such a scale in Africa.

Since their relocation to Chicago in 2004, vocalist Hunter Husar and his buddies have cultivated a certain air of mystery that keeps audiences on their toes.  Named after the famous chinese game that was imported to the West at the end of the 19th century, Mahjongg released their second full-length record, Kontpab, last year.  It was immediately dubbed as a ‘concept album’, with a title that sprang from a fusion of the German expression ‘kontra-punkte’, meaning ‘counterpoint’ and the word ‘pab’ which roughly translates as… ‘spam’.For the band members Kontpab personified a deity that they collectively worshiped; the nine-track album representingtheir spiritual journey from ‘The Grid’ to ‘The Sphere’, and thus the Kontpab myth was born…

Unsurprisingly, the record appealed to Olympia-based musician and producer Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System) who is known for his eclectic taste for sub-indie experimentation.But that’s enough chitchat: let’s hear it from Mahjongg.
