D’emblée, soyons honnête: le hip hop n’a jamais été le genre musical le plus gay friendly qu’il soit.

C’est même un euphémisme, tant il est vrai que certains des artistes les plus en vue du genre n’hésitent pas à traiter tout le monde de “fag” à longueur d’albums, à l’instar de Kanye West.

Seulement voilà, à la Nouvelle Orléans, on ne bêle pas forcément avec le troupeau.

Alors que la ville se remet peu à peu de l’ouragan Katrina, un nouveau genre fait fureur dans les clubs, et commence lentement à s’exporter à travers le pays : le Sissy Bounce.

Association de “Sissy” (“femmelette” en VF) et de “Bounce”, sous-divison du hip hop typique du coin, construit sur un flow ultra saccadé et des beats electro très marqués, le terme à le mérite d’être clair: il s’agit principalement de hip hop fait par des dragqueens et/ou des homosexuels optant pour un discours résolument féministe.

Même s’ils rejettent l’appellation de “Sissies”, ses pratiquants peuvent difficilement nier l’évidence du mouvement, les artistes et les performances se multipliant.

Le plus étonnant reste que les concerts ne sont absolument pas destiné à un public strictement gay. La popularité des représentants phares du genre – Big Freedia (prononcez “Frida”), Katey Red ou Vockah Redu – va bien au delà des cercles d’initiés, et gagne une population de plus en plus mixte.

En se penchant un tant soit peu sur l’histoire artistique de la Nouvelle Orléans, les choses s’éclairent.

La ville a traditionnellement été un berceau pour les performers gays et trans, notamment en ce qui concerne la danse et la musique. Ce qui est donc regardé avec curiosité par le reste des States devient absolument ordinaire une fois passées les frontières de la Louisiane.

Le New York Times vient tout juste de consacrer un excellent reportage sur ce phénomène qui entame actuellement la conquête de la Côte Est.

“Less is More”… Les 2 M californiens, Michael (Avishay) et Marisa (Rowland) l’ont bien compris : avec une guitare et presqu’une batterie (une cymbale, une caisse claire et quelques autres trucs, en somme), ils font un bouzin pas possible, une sorte de garage-pop dévastatrice, comme Japandroids s’était perdu dans les années 60. Le premier EP du duo, “In Your Room” est disponible sur le site du label – les attachants frappadingues d’AMDISCS – pour 3 euro.

Wild Nothing: Chinatown (Blog)

C’est indubitable, Wild Nothing ne peut rester un “Rien sauvage” longtemps, tellement c’est bien. Ritournelle parfaite pour l’été, “Chinatown” a en plus l’avantage d’avoir un clip avec un gamin mignon à béret dedans, parfait pour plaire à votre mère.

Ceci dit, le premier album du projet de Jack Tatum (c’est lui le “Wild Nothing”), entre glam, chill-wave et nuage pop, s’appelle “Gemini” et sort sur le label de Brooklyn Captured Tracks.

Woven Bones: If It Feels Alright (Blog)

Depuis mille ans – ou à peu près – Austin, Texas est un des berceaux du rock psychédélique. Woven Bones est d’Austin, et ils sont psychédéliques. Ca tombe bien. Bon, Andrew Burr, cerveau du groupe (?), triche un peu, puisqu’il est originaire d’Orlando, Floride, plus ville de sexagénaire, pays de Mickey. Ceci dit leur premier album “In and Out and Back Again” sort sur le stakhanoviste label de Chicago Hozac Records. Et il est bien, on dirait un truc entre le Gun Club et Spacemen 3, avec des lunettes noires.

Coma Cinema, c’est Mat Cothran, chansonnier qui promet le Sud à la Caroline. Certes, Coma Cinema, ça sonne plutôt de la fidélité basse, mais ce sont aussi des torch songs belle comme des pick-up rouges, comme celui du clip de ‘Only’, extrait de l’album au nom Syd-Barrettien ‘Stoned Alone’, disponible en téléchargement libre sur le site du jeune homme, avec invitation à la diffusion de sa musique. Partageons !

Troy Von Balthazar: In Limited Light (Blog)

Boite à rythme bancale, lyrisme barré et space echo, “In Limited Light”, le premier extrait du nouvel album de Troy Von Balthazar a peur du noir, mais laisse pourtant la lumière éteinte. Il est aussi sur le EP digital “Dots and Hearts” à paraître dans pas longtemps – voyez la pochette, elle est magnifique. L’ancien frontman de Chokebore a beaucoup voyagé, avec sa planche de surf, pour enregistrer “How to Live on Nothing”, à paraître le 13 septembre, sur le label parisien Third Side Records.

Hé, il y aura une tournée cet automne aussi, avec le Point Ephémère comme étape parisienne le 4 novembre.

On se demande parfois ce que deviennent nos idoles de post-adolescence… Josh T. Pearson, chanteur des cultissimes éphémères texans Lift To Experience, vit désormais quelque part à Paris, fait des concerts dans une crêperie (le West Country Girls, pour la citer). Avec H-Burns, Thousand, Tom Cooney et Bosque Brown – ouf, une fille -, ils ont enregistré en 2 jours dans ladite crêperie 12 titres, entre inédits et reprises de classiques ou d’inédits, à paraître d’abord en vinyle puis en cd, sur le label West Country Night.

Concert de lancement du projet le 24 juin au Nouveau Casino à Paris, donc, avec les 5 musiciens cités. Chouette.

Vaporeux, Bye Bye Blackbird est le projet du seul Mikey S, bidouilleur-bricoleur, rêveur et psychédélique de San Francisco. Son projet en a en tout cas l’illogisme. Un EP joyeux (le “Happy High EP”) est disponible librement – 8’30 de bonheur -, dont est extrait le véritable hymne dream-wave “So Sorry Girl”.

Avec des titres comme “Hugo Chavez”, “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”, “Deep Ass Shit (You’ll Get It When You’re High)”, leurs touches de Molah Omar (ou Borat) rappeur, et un nom pareil, les New-Yorkais Das Racist, sorte de Beastie Boys rabza (ou de Puppetmastaz sans les puppets), attirent direct l’attention. Mount Eerie: Wind’s Poem (Blog)

“Thanks god for mental illness”… This unofficial music video illustrates Mount Eerie‘s music so well: slow motion violence and intensity. Phil Elverum, Mount Eerie’s frontman and principal member (and formerly known as The Microphones) had a great album, last year’s “Wind’s poem”, full of drone guitars and weird melancholy.

As a solo act, Mount Eerie is less violent but probably even more intense. Check out this live solo performance shot in Chicago, 6 years ago. “It’s oh so quiet”.

Deer Tick is coming back with their third album, “the Black Dirt Sessions”, out on June 8th on Partisan Records. John Mc Cauley, Deer Tick frontman, is the kind of guy you could expect everything – spitting, vomitting, getting drunk & naked on stage… Their hometown Providence, Rhode Island, is probably boring, that’s maybe why Deer Tick are touring America so much. They’ve played their “asses off since the beginning and do not foresee slowing down anytime soon”. Check them out.

The Riot Grrrl movement from Olympia has made a hell of a journey! Initiated in the early 90′s by bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, or Heavens To Betsy, it is now time for the story to be stored in a book. From its early times to Le Tigre and the Spice Girls, “Girl Power” is is an attempt to sell to younger generation the very idea of stoping being consumers of male-dominated culture and starting producing its own.

I guess the message from author Marisa Meltzer, a all-girl accapella group called The Skirts former-singer, comes through.

Our people at The Drone are not so much into Tool, A Perfect Circle or Puscifer but they are definitely into drinking wine so this documentary might be interesting. Besides being a reclusive rock star, Maynard James Keenan produces his own wine in the hostile desert of Arizona. His vineyard is named after a pubic wig, Merkin. One of the wine produced by Keenan is a delightful Cabernet Sauvignon named Nagual Del Judith in memory of his mother, after he scattered her ashes across the vineyard (I want a bottle of that).

Blood Into Wine gives unprecedented insight into Maynard’s world and his motivations for taking on the arduous task of bringing winemaking to the region’s unforgiving landscape and how winemaking fits into his creative trajectory.

For some reason, Milla Jovovic is featured on the film.

Taqwacore: The Birth Of Punk Islam (Blog)

All of this started off back in 2002. Michael Muhammad Knight, a 32 year-old American converted muslim wrote a book called The Taqwacores (from “Taqwa”, an Islamic concept of love and fear for Allah, and Core from Hardcore). This novel is a fiction story of a group of Muslim punk-rockers living in Buffalo, NY who soon inspired the start of an actual scene!

8 years after its self-publication by the author, the Taqwacores, which I hardly recommand to read, is now a documentary. The trailer speaks for itself.

Interview of Michael Muhammad Knight:

“When he was 17, Michael Knight left his mother’s home in Rochester to study Islam at a Pakistani madrassa. It was his first act of rebellion – against his abusive, schizophrenic, white-supremacist father. Years later, burned out on the demands of religious dogma, Mike rebelled once more – by penning a Muslim Punk manifesto called The Taqwacores. His work of fiction struck a chord with young Muslims around the world and before long, real-life Taqwacore bands were creating a scene. This film follows Michael and his band of Muslim punks as they journey across the U.S. and Pakistan, transforming their worlds, their religion and themselves through the spirit of Taqwacore.” – from the Taqwacores website.

“Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s big four would not only still be around and more popular than ever, but will now play together for the first time. What a mindfuck! Bring it on!”, says Lars Ulrich from Metallica.

In the early 80′s Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica and Megadeth were know as “the big four ” of Thrash for metal fans. And believe it or not, zillions $ and gigs after the beginning, they never played together.

For my part, the last time I saw something from those bands, it was pretty uggly. Dave Mustaine, frontman of Megadeth was at first in Metallica which he got kicked out. Here he goes some 25 years after, In a pathetic but nevertheless hilarious documentary “Some Kind Of Monsters”, talking with Ulrich and a shrimp trying get over it!

One the tour hits Europe, I’m attending.

The first word he ever said at 6 months was “Constantinople”, he was recruited by Andy Warhol who wanted someone to watch television for him at all hours of the night, and was enlisted as a designer for the World Trade Center tour II. But today, Paul Laffoley, 69 years old, is mostly known for his complex work as a painter.

From the popular to the arcane – works in such disciplines as art history, history, physics, science fiction, classical literature, architecture, and such occult sciences as parapsychology and theosophy. Now this takes a little bit to figure out. I personnaly just love how it looks like.
