In 1969, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Jefferson Airplane both released a song called “Wooden Ships”, each band claiming the original release of the song. In 2003, Wooden Shjips was the name that Eric “Ripley” Johnson gave to an experimental band that would involve non-musicians, playing repetitive riffs over and over again. Ripley’s ambition was not to get famous with his band or even looking for gigs, but his work was driven by his fascination for out of print records that get discovered maybe twenty years after their first release. Raised in Connecticut, Ripley moved to San Francisco to fulfill his “soon to be discovered lost gem” project, influenced buy the 60′s Garage rock era and all the minimalistic composers such as Terry Riley. Surprisingly, Ripley has some unexpected views on hippies, nostalgia or LSD guru Timothy Leary.
